"Beyond"
He is not looking at you.
He is not looking inward.
He is looking at something none of us can see.
And yet somehow, standing in front of this piece — you believe in it completely.
I have drawn this gorilla three times now. Each time he has shown me a different face. The first time he looked directly at me, absolute and present. The second time he was lost in thought, carrying something quietly that words could not hold. This time he looked up. Away from everything around him. Past the frame, past the room, past whatever you brought with you when you walked in.
I stood with this pose for a long time before I drew it. There is something in the stillness of that chest and the direction of those eyes that stopped me completely. He was not searching. He had already found something. He was simply looking toward it with the certainty of a creature that has never once doubted its own direction.
I grew up across four countries: Nigeria, China, Ethiopia, and the United Kingdom. I spent most of my childhood arriving somewhere new and trying to figure out where I was supposed to be looking. What I was supposed to be moving toward. I watched other people for clues the way you watch a map when you are not sure you are reading it correctly.
This gorilla never had that problem.
He knows exactly what is beyond. And he is not in any hurry to get there, because he already knows he will.
I titled this piece "Beyond" because that is the only word that fits. Not what he sees. Not where he is going. Just beyond. The place past certainty where only vision lives.
This piece is for walls that want to remind you every morning that there is something worth looking toward. Something past the immediate. Something worth the patience it takes to reach it.
