"What Are You Thinking About?"
Some moments stop you completely.
This one stopped me. His hand resting under his chin. The weight of his stillness. A posture so quietly human it made me hold my breath, as if moving might break whatever he was thinking through.
I titled this piece "What are you thinking about?" — not because I expected an answer, but because the question felt true. He looked like someone carrying a thought too large for language. I have felt that way too.
I grew up across four countries: Nigeria, the United Kingdom, China, Ethiopia. I was always the observer, always on the outside looking in. In gorillas I found something I recognised, a creature who holds enormous complexity beneath a surface of perfect stillness.
This piece is the one I return to. Not because it is dramatic, but because it is honest. It asks nothing of you except to sit with it for a moment.
In a world that rarely stops, I think that is worth something.
